Preparing for
your medical.
The questions we are asked most, answered properly. If yours is not here, send us an email or phone reception before you travel.
Before your appointment
What must I bring?
- ID document or passport
- Seaman's book or discharge book
- Your current medical certificate
- Spectacles or contact lenses
- A list of your medication and doses
- Vaccination card or records
- Employer referral or booking reference
Do I need to fast?
If your assessment includes blood glucose or cholesterol testing, do not eat for eight hours beforehand. Water is fine, and take your usual medication unless you have been told otherwise. A morning appointment makes fasting easier.
Can I complete my forms before I arrive?
Yes, and it saves real time. Your booking confirmation carries a link to your consent form and health questionnaire. Complete them beforehand and we start the moment you walk in.
On the day
How long will it take?
Two to three hours from arrival to completion for most assessments, depending on what your employer requires. Allow a full morning rather than squeezing it between other commitments.
What happens during the assessment?
- Reception, check in and provide a urine sample
- Nurse station, vitals, vision, hearing test and blood draw
- Radiology, chest x-ray one floor below
- Doctor, full examination and review of your history
- Completion, we explain the outcome and what happens next

Where do I park?
Mayo Medical Centre has secure visitor parking on site. Take the lift to the first floor, Mayo 9. Allow ten minutes to find us on your first visit.
Results and certificates
When do I get my certificate?
We endeavour to complete all fitness assessments as promptly as possible. With no outstanding medical issues that need correcting, you can normally expect your completed fitness assessment and certificates within three to five working days.
What if I am found temporarily unfit?
Temporarily unfit usually means something needs treating or clarifying, or that you have not yet met the required time period to prove stability. It does not mean you cannot work at sea. We explain exactly what is required, and reassess once it is resolved.
Can anything speed up my medical?
Completing your forms before you arrive and bringing every document on the list above is the single biggest thing you can do. Booking early in the day helps too, because bloods and radiology reach the laboratory sooner.
Beyond that, no. Where a result is borderline or a finding needs clarifying, we repeat it or wait for the report. A certificate issued quickly but wrongly puts you on a vessel you are not fit for, days from shore. Accuracy and safety come first, and every reputable employer would rather wait than carry that risk.

How do I send in outstanding documents?
Email them to results@workfit.co.za with your full name and date of birth. Specialist reports, dental clearance and previous records all go to that address.
Commercial diving medicals
Which special investigations does my diving medical need, and when?
Every diving assessment includes the consultation, spirometry, audiogram, urine dipstick and fasting glucose. What is added on top depends on your age and on whether this is your first diving medical.
| Who | Stress ECG and chest x-ray | Lipogram |
|---|---|---|
| First medical | Baseline, with haemoglobin and haematocrit | Yes |
| Under 40 | Every five years | With the five-yearly assessment |
| 40 to 50 | Every two years | Every year |
| Over 50 | Every year | Every year |
A treadmill stress ECG replaces the Chester Step Test as the exercise capacity assessment, so you never do both. In line with EDTC guidance, a resting ECG is done once, at your first diving medical, and is not repeated unless there is a clinical reason to.
Do I need to fast for a diving medical?
Yes. Every diving assessment includes a fasting glucose, and a lipogram where one is due, so do not eat for eight hours beforehand. Water is fine, and take your usual medication unless told otherwise.
Offshore and OEUK medicals
What happens at an OEUK offshore medical?
The same visit structure as any assessment here, worked against current Offshore Energies UK guidance, Issue 8.1, rather than a generic template. Complete the questionnaire before you arrive, bring photographic identity, and allow a full morning.

Is there a weight limit for offshore work?
Yes. Under OEUK Issue 8.1 the limit is 124kg total clothed weight for work on the UK Continental Shelf. It is set by the maximum capacity of the helicopter winching equipment used in an emergency evacuation, not by health alone. You are weighed at the heliport before mobilisation, and anyone over the limit is refused travel whatever their certificate says.
A transition period runs to 31 October 2026. Anyone over 110kg is formally advised of the coming limit now. Between 115kg and 124kg you are issued a shorter certificate, three to six months rather than the standard two years, so weight is reviewed more often. From 1 November 2026 anyone over 124kg is unfit for UK offshore mobilisation.
A body mass index of 40 or above brings additional clinical and functional screening, including comorbidity blood tests and a six-minute mobility test to confirm you could self-evacuate.
If you are near the threshold we tell you plainly where you stand and what can realistically change before your next assessment. Nobody is left guessing.

Payment and privacy
How do I pay?
Payment is due on the day, by card, EFT or SnapScan. If your employer or agency is settling the account directly, bring written confirmation with you.
What does my employer see?
Every company runs their fitness assessments differently. Some have their shoreside medical team review your full medical before the certificate is approved. Others rely on the examining doctor to apply their policy. Your company's consent form sets out what we release, and to whom. Onboard, all anyone needs is a fitness certificate valid for the full length of your contract.
How do I change or cancel my booking?
Use the link in your confirmation email, or call reception on +27 12 940 4383. Twenty-four hours notice where you can manage it, so we can offer the slot to someone else.
